Recommendations anyone?

So... can anyone recommend a good, reasonably priced, data recovery company?

Yup, the Macbook harddrive is dead. Apple will not do data recovery, so I must first pay to have data recovered (if I can afford it, I've heard quotes up to $3,500 at this point) and only then can I get the computer repaired.

My last backup was in September. Peanut's birthday was in October. See where this is going?

I feel angry and upset and stupid and guilty. I know how to backup (but really, who figures a three-month-old computer that rarely leaves the house is going to check out this soon? Seriously!) I have cried very hard today.

I don't have a lot of photos or mementos of my childhood. In losing these photos I feel more upset than it probably warrants, but it hurts me deep down. I want that data back. I want those memories back. Mr Babbler gave me a Kitchen Aid artisan mixer for Christmas and I have offered to return it and use the money towards the data recovery. I will forgo book purchases for the next year. It means that much to me.

So if anyone has any experience with good data recovery at a reasonable price, I'm open to suggestions. (I'm looking at the Canadian company ReStoring Data Inc. Anyone have a review?)

I will ask my husband about this when he gets home as this is his specialty, but for now I am offering some optimism, and assure you that you will get your data back, and that it won't cost an arm and a leg.

Email me a reminder to check my office in the morning for the company we used a couple years ago, OK?

I don't think they were that expensive (but they aren't downtown, they're in Richmond Hill).

Oh, BB... I'm so sorry.

But you know what? The fact that you've got SciFi Dad up there on your team, means you've got a pretty good lead already!

I've got a computer guy up here, too-- but he's from Richmond Hill, as well. He has done work for our company, and I believe he will come downtown if need be.

If you need more info, drop me an email... But do take SFD's advice first, since he's got considerably more expertise in this area than I do!

Wishing you luck-- thinking of you.

Well, we have a PC and I don't know if a Mac means more expense, but we just went to our local computer shop and they managed to recover all the data. We had purchased the computer from them and it was a faulty motherboard that they installed so they did it for free. I didn't get the sense it would have been expensive though.

I hope you get your data back without having to sacrifice too much!

Whoops, just saw Mac and Cheese's comment, too-- Wow, BB, it looks to me like you're going to be put on the right track, for sure.

Sending lots of good thoughts your way! I'm willing to bet you'll get those photos back...

oh honey.

I don't know.

we obviously need tequila.

Your data shall be retrieved. There is no price too high for photos. We will have a fundraiser. I am serious.

Apple will not do data recovery?
WTF???
I was thinking of going to the Mac store and trying to hijack a geek when this happened to me.
I was totally freaking out. Those photos are priceless.
Fingers crossed for you

Oh man - I am so sorry. I will check when I get back to work on Monday - I think our IT guy knows a good company...

oh, no.

i feel your pain. i nearly lost a thesis and all our daughter's baby photos that way. we found a guy who was great and reasonable and pledged not to do anything drastic but just to try a few tricks which cost far less money - are you in the Toronto area? I don't know whether he does Macs, but I could get Joe to forward his contact information...

I'm so sorry. I wish I could help.

My iBook has "died" twice in its five-year life span and I managed to retrieve all the data both times my self when a repair shop couldn't.

I'm not sure how this helps you--other than to let you know that it's possible, I guess.

I'm afraid to post. You seemed to be jinxed, and I don't want your mojo. I'm off to baby my PowerBook G4 -- ooh, that's a good little Apple. You make me seem cool and relevant like the young Emo boy/shill from the commercials. Though I am fond of John Hodgman just the same.

I am no help at all, I'm afraid--but I wanted to lend my sympathies...

no ideas, just sympathy...

I'm so sorry this happened! I would be crushed. In fact, you sparked me to check that hubby is backing up our pics more often (he promised to do it right away).

I asked hubby about this for you, and since we are no where near you, he can't recommend anyone. But what he did say is that a good recovery program should be able to recover everything. The problem is that the really good recovery programs are incredibly expensive, and that's why it cost so much to have the data recovered. I don't know how this helps, but it's all I have to offer except my sympathy!

Good luck!!!

Oh no. That is terrible. And a good reminder to back up regularly before I lose all our photos, too! I really hope you can get that sorted, because it's a sad thing to lose what you wanted to preserve, that's for sure.

Did you get your data back? Inquiring minds want to know!

oh I wish I could help but we've done it all ourselves whenever it happens (and because the last time was so terrifying we invested in a standalone backup hard drive that is set to do our backups once a week). I know this doesn't help but like denguy said - it is possible (very possible) that you will get everything back.
